Four Dead In Jerusalem Attack As Truck Rams Into Soldiers

Four Israeli soldiers were killed and 15 were wounded in Jerusalem after a truck rammed into the sidewalk near Armon Hanatziv, an Israeli settlement neighborhood south of East Jerusalem. Once the soldiers realized what was going on, they shot at the truck until they killed the driver.

Police said three men and one woman, all in their 20s, were killed.

Russian President Vladimir Putin offered his condolences to Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over a terrorist attack in Jerusalem, the Kremlin press service said on January 8.

The incident happened on a popular promenade overlooking the Old City of Jerusalem, Israel Radio said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the scene on Saturday afternoon and told reporters at the scene that the attacker was a likely supporter of ISIS based on similarities with truck attacks in Nice and Berlin.

Sunday's attack comes after a relative lull in Palestinian attacks on Israelis that escalated past year.

Several of the injured were trapped under the wheels of the white Mercedes lorry even after the driver was shot dead by the soldiers and armed civilians.

Fawzi Barhum, a spokesman for Islamist movement Hamas, which runs the Gaza Strip, saluted the attack, calling it "heroic and fearless".

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said security had been heightened throughout the city in response.

The Guardian notes that at least 37 Israelis, two Americans, and 231 Palestinians have been killed in violence in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories over the past 15 months.

Palestinians have long demanded an independent state in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem - areas Israel captured in a 1967 war.

"We bless this heroic operation resisting the Israeli occupation to force it to stop its crimes and violations against our people", Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum told Reuters news agency.
