Will do surgical strikes again if needed: Army Chief Bipin Rawat

Army Chief General Bipin Rawat has asked soldiers to make use of complaint boxes in case they have any complaints.

In an address to officers in the EAC on December 31, Bakshi had said he was not resigning so that he could fight the "smear campaign" that had been launched to malign his image in the run-up to the Army chief 's selection by the government, as was then first reported by TOI. Let the troops have the confidence in the senior leadership of the Army that their grievances, genuine of otherwise, will be addressed in right earnest.

Rawat's statement came after an Army jawan video-complained about poor quality of food being served to security personnel posted in border areas and alleged harassment by superiors. While announcing setting up of a "suggestion-cum- grievance box" in the Army headquarters, Gen Rawat also assured whoever writes to him, his or her identity will be protected.

However, he added: "If the complainant is unsatisfied with the action taken, he can choose other medium (to voice his grievance)".

He said that the jawans should raise the matter internally as opposed to resorting to social media.

Should anyone have any grievances of whatever nature, rather than indirectly communicating grievances, we have an excellent system of reaching out to the senior staff in the Army. "If dissatisfied, they can use other means".

In the video Lance Naik Yagya Pratap Singh, posted in 42 Infantry Brigade in Dehradun, said that after writing a letter to the PM, Defence Minister, the President and to the Supreme Court in June a year ago, his brigade received a communication from the PMO asking it to investigate his grievances.

The Army chief also praised the "sahayak" or "buddy" system in the Army, saying that no soldier is forced to perform the tasks of a "sahayak" if he does not like it. Admitting that there were "bad eggs" among jawans and officers alike, Rawat said sometimes the complainant is not able to properly put across his point leading to dissatisfaction or does not agree with the answer. "Once women are willing to take this kind of call, we will address this issue", he said. He also said in the 12-lakh strong Army, some issues like these will come up.
