Up to an inch of snow is expected to fall, "along with a trace of ice", the Taunton, Mass. -based service said.
Many roads in areas north of Bellingam have been snow-covered since then, and road crews have been plowing and sanding nearly continuously.
"There's a lot of variability", said Jay Engle, a meteorologist at the weather service's NY office. He's watching a storm system that may bring significant snowfall to Southern New England as early as Wednesday night, going into Thursday morning. At the very least, it's shaping up to be "a shovable snow".
The Portland area may receive up to 6 inches of snow beginning early Tuesday, followed by periods of sleet and freezing rain, said a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Gray.
The coldest part of Friday night will be around 8 p.m., when the temperature dips to below freezing at around 30.
Early snowfall projections for Wednesday night through Thursday night in northeastern sections of New Jersey, as well as New York City, Long Island and CT.
Tuesday should see scattered rain showers during the morning commute and potentially lasting until lunch time.
The winter weather advisory is in effect from 9 a.m. Tuesday through 1 a.m. Wednesday.
