Gorsuch confirmation hearing to start March 20

Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, made the announcement on Thursday after consulting with the panel's top Democrat, California Sen.

The Judiciary Committee hearings are expected to span several days and draw intense public scrutiny.

Grassley's office indicated in a statement that the opening statements will take place on Monday, March 20, and Gorsuch will face the committee the following day. Questioning of Gorsuch will begin on March 21.

But some Republicans are already predicting that Gorsuch will get confirmed.

"During the 2016 campaign, far right groups, who have worked to undermine the rights of workers, presented an edict to then-candidate Donald Trump: commit to nominating a justice from our approved list in exchange for our support".

As part of the effort to woo some of those Democrats, Gorsuch has been making traditional courtesy calls to members of the Senate for the past few weeks. On Thursday, he has seven meetings scheduled, six of which are with Democrats.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said earlier this month that he has "serious, serious concerns" about Gorsuch, saying he had deflected many questions.

As parents of two young children, proud Missoulians and attorneys who value the rule of law, we strongly believe that the United States must have an independent judiciary to serve as a check on extreme and unconstitutional policies that threaten our democracy.

"Judge Gorsuch has met every demand placed on him by the Minority", Grassley said.

"It's time for him to have the opportunity to speak for himself before the judiciary committee", Grassley said.

If confirmed, Judge Gorsuch, who sits on the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver, would succeed the late Justice Antonin Scalia, who died a year ago.
