Penn State races past MI to keep NCAA hopes alive

Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman kept MI in the game when Oklahoma State jumped out to a small lead.

In a 1992 regional semifinal, Michigan, led by the Fab Five, knocked off No. 2 Oklahoma State 75-72.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Paul George made six 3-pointers and finished with 39 points to lead the Indiana Pacers to a 98-77 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday night.

In addition to shooting 64 per cent from the field in the second half and 51.8 per cent for the game, the Wolverines had only four turnovers.

The Bruins' star guard Lonzo Ball could be starting for the New York Knicks next season - although given the lottery odds, he probably won't be - but still, Ball is the most electrifying guard to play the college game since current Knick Derrick Rose suited up for Memphis.

"We just had enough firepower to overcome their incredible offensive talent and get enough points to win", MI coach John Beilein said. "That was a big thing when they could get it".

And, of course, Walton's team won.

Before his fifth and final year at OSU, Forte talked about how he wanted to win an NCAA Tournament game. Michigan State likes to get out and run, but they have been able to grind out wins against similar teams like Wisconsin and Northwestern. They will be facing the Big Ten Tournament champions, who won four games in four days as the No. 8 seed to claim the conference tournament title. "He has been on a tear, and I know he is going to continue to do it".

If he gets going we could be in store for a battle. MI prevailed by one, largely on the strength of 26 points from point guard Derrick Walton Jr. The bottom line is that you played extremely hard, you really made a lot of plays, and you felt good about it through most of it. Jawun Evans had a slow start to the game, but rallied to post an impressive 23 points, 12 dimes and seven boards. I think overall, there were just questions too about the tournament.

Tempo is usually dictated by a team's point guard. They are 321st in bench minutes while Michigan State is 1st.

But as good as the Cowboys were offensively, MI was just a little bit better. The only disappointment is that it was played at such a high level that it's unfortunate that one of these teams, Oklahoma State in this case, has to be sent home after just one game.

"That meant a lot to me, first of all, because he's never done that before", Wagner said.

I remember the song and dance when Marcus Smart announced he was staying another year.

Minutes later, a transition triple from Duncan Robinson was followed by a timely defensive stop and a pair of long triples from Walton - and then a nifty floater - to suddenly give U-M its largest lead of the game, 76-68, with 7:33 to play. Evans might be the fastest guard U-M has seen this season; Walton is one of the most physical the Cowboys have had to defend.
