For a state that has always had law and order issues, the nomination of Yogi Adityanath as the chief minister, only brings more worry and bares open the possibility of a rise in religious intolerance.
Also, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav were also present at the event.
In 2014, a video of Yogi Adityanath surfaced in which he was seen urging Hindus to convert Muslim girls as retribution for Muslim youths marrying Hindu girls.
Earlier today, Adityanath was summoned to Delhi on a special flight to meet Prime Minister Modi, but he returned to Lucknow without being able to meet the PM Modi.
Hours after taking oath, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday promised to work for all sections of the society without any discrimination, with focus on development and job creation.
Two deputy chief ministers and 47 other ministers were also sworn in at the ceremony, which came a week after the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party won a landslide victory in state assembly elections.
Addressing his first press conference as the chief minister, Adityanath said: "Our government is fully committed to fulfill the promises that were made (before elections)". Senior Congress leader Veerappa Moily had even called it "an assault on secularism" and the CPM accused the BJP of systematically playing the communal card.
Adityanath said that in the last 15 years Uttar Pradesh has been left behind in all respects, adding that they would take the state on path of growth and development. "India is not Hinduism".
By appointing Adityanath, the BJP appears to be indicating that it will go ahead with a strong pro-Hindutva and developmental agenda in 2019.
Adityanath, BJP's representative from Gorakhpur, is also the head priest of the Gorakhnath temple. "Our Government will work for the welfare of the people", he said.
