Iredell on fringe of severe Monday afternoon storm

A powerful storm system that killed two in Louisiana took aim at Alabama and other parts of the Southeast on Monday, bringing strong winds and heavy rains to the region.

Central North Carolina is under a risk of severe weather for tonight.

All modes are possible with this system to include damaging winds, large hail, heavy rainfall, and tornadoes.

Neville Alexander, 3, and Francine Gotch, 38, were inside the mobile home in the town of Breaux Bridge, just outside Lafayette, Louisiana, when the storm slammed into the dwelling, causing "significant damage", the St. Martin Sheriff's Office said on its Facebook page. "I hate that it happened".

A strong band of storms will be approaching the area at around 9 p.m. Monday.


At least 10 tornadoes were reported Sunday in Louisiana and Texas, ripping apart buildings and knocking down trees.

Parts of the South will be dealing with severe storms, too, with a somewhat higher threat of tornadoes for portions of Georgia, Alabama and the Carolinas.

Georgia Power said more than 50,000 customers were in the dark Monday afternoon.

The National Weather Service in Mobile said the main concerns are damaging winds of up to 70 miles per hour or more, large hail and isolated tornadoes - some of which could be strong.

On Sunday, there were 11 reports of tornadoes in Texas and Louisiana, the Storm Prediction Center said.

Several Midlands school districts canceled all afterschool programs and sporting events for Monday.

Louisiana's governor is warning residents the "extremely risky weather" hitting the state is just getting started and the state should be on "high alert". He urged people to keep their cellphones charged and close by so that they could get severe weather alerts through Monday. "There was a mother and daughter inside and both were killed".
