AMD Ryzen 5 1600X overclocked to 5.9GHz with 6C/12T enabled

The Ryzen 5 1600X competes directly against Intel's Core i5 7600K which retails at a similar price. Sure enough, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. aka AMD, the well-known American multinational semiconductor company from Sunnyvale, CA had an announcement for you, which if you have missed, we are here to present that. On paper, the cost of those two extra cores is nearly an afterthought when you stack it up against its direct competitor, the $239 (£219, AU$339) quad-core Intel Core i5-7600K. Each features two Core Complex (CCX) units with CPU cores switched off. The Ryzen 5 1600X, however, is comparable to the high-end Intel Core i7 processor in terms of speed and performance despite being way less expensive.

The one of most interest to us is the Ryzen 5 1600X.

What's also interesting that in games that rely heavily on a single CPU core, AMD's Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 CPUs perform similarly. Although 4GHz tends to be the rough barrier for air cooled Ryzen CPUs, one overclocker has given a Ryzen 5 1600X processor a bath in liquid nitrogen and with that cryogenic fluid in place, he was able to clock it as high as 5.9GHz without disabling any cores. The Ryzen 5 1600X carries a 95W TDP rating and doesn't come with a stock cooler. The fact is that week after week Ryzen processor performance has been increasing thanks to BIOS updates and software optimizations. Although the Core i5-7600K is probably now cheaper, AMD's equivalent boasts of 6 cores and 12 threads, whereas Intel's only has 4 cores and 4 threads.

As far as memory is concerned, Ryzen 5 will support DDR4 ECC and also Non-ECC, and the memory support that Ryzen 7 had will be the same.

As with all of our builds, we used Founders Edition GeForce GTX 1080 cards. The lineup consists of four models, the Ryzen 5 1600X, Ryzen 5 1600, Ryzen 5 1500X and Ryzen 5 1400, and they slot in below the previously launched Ryzen 7 models.

Regardless of those external factors, the 1600X proves it has the chops to be your main gaming system and a just as effective media creation platform - two things that are becoming intrinsically connected in this age of live-streaming, eSports and uploading gameplay videos. The last three processors have a TDP of 65W. While he admits that some of the records he broke there have since been beaten by other overclockers, the Ryzen 5 six-core, 12-thread record stands. One core on each is switched off for the six-core Ryzen 5s, and two cores on each are turned off for the quad-core CPUs. AMD Ryzen 5 series processors include support for a number of additional instructions over previous generation products, as shown in the CPU-Z screen shots above.

If you've been looking for an affordable, powerhouse CPU that both works and parties hard, this is it.
