2000 homes evacuated in southwest Florida amid brush fires

Collier County also issued a similar ban on Friday that will remain in place until May 12.

Gov. Rick Scott deployed Florida National Guard resources in response to the fires. The blaze was about 60 percent contained on Saturday, officials said.

A doublewide mobile home and a garage went up in flames, according to Polk County Fire Rescue.

Firefighters with Polk County Fire Rescue and the Florida Forest Service responded to the brush fire in the 10900 block of Sportsman Trail shortly after noon, Polk County Fire Rescue spokesman Kevin Watler said.

A 700-acre wildfire is burning in Polk County.

Crews worked into the night on Friday, using bulldozers to plow through the front line, make breaks and stop the fire's spread.

Local officials didn't have an estimate of the fire's containment Friday and said it was too early to tell whether any homes have been lost to the fire.

Thousands of homes have been evacuated in Florida as wildfires ravage the southern U.S. state.

Polk Fire Rescue says several structures are burning in the rural community east of Frostproof. "That's the main thing that needs to happen right now".

Authorities have not determined what caused the fire but they are offering a $5,000 reward for information about how the fire started.

"These wildfires are unsafe and if you're within the evacuation area, do not stay in your home", he said Friday.

Collier County officials said Sunday that the roughly 5,500-acre fire in Golden Gate Estates is about 50 percent contained, and the rest is close to being secured after firefighters were aided by rain.
