India opens longest bridge spanning to region disputed with China

The 9.15-km bridge over the Brahmaputra River will reduce travel time to the disputed territory by around five hours.

Mr Rijiju had earlier said that "Arunachal Pradesh is part of India and that reality will not change, regardless of who likes it or not".

The bridge will save travel of 165 km and time of six hours.

Addressing a public meeting at Dhola on the occasion, the Prime Minister said Dhola-Sadiya bridge opens the door for economic development in the North East on a big scale. Apart from the Dhola-Sadiya bridge, SAIL steel has also been used for constructing the Bogibeel Rail-cum-Road bridge, several power plants including 750 MW power plant of NTPC & 600 MW Kameng Hydro-electric project, Trans Arunachal highway etc. which all are very important projects for the region.

Communist Party of India (CPI) has termed the three years of Narendra Modi led BJP government as 'three years of disaster'. “This bridge is not only a pride for Assam but it is also an honour for the entire country because the nation has been able to build the longest bridge in the remotest end of Assam, ” he said.

He also highlighted the development initiative taken up by the BJP government at the Centre for the northeast region for which improving the railway infrastructure was also in the pipeline to speed up the economic progress.

If the farmers take up organic ginger farming, a global market would open up for them, he said. If work had continued then you would have had the bridge 10 years ago.

Drawing a contrast between the 10-year UPA rule and the Modi government, Shah said the former was marked by a scam nearly every month, while even the rivals of the BJP-led dispensation have not been able to level a single charge of corruption against it.

Modi chose Assam to address the nation on the completion of three years of his government in Delhi.

The PM said the government was now keen to develop inland waterways on the Brahmaputra river.

Road connectivity in the North-East is set to see a major transformation. "Prime Minister had promised creation of two crore jobs every year but only 1.35 lakhs jobs was created in 2015 which was the worst in past seven years".

Earlier, Modi, on a day-long visit to the state, was received by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Governor Banwarilal Purohit and other dignitaries on his arrival at the airport. Ltd, the Dhola-Sadiya bridge is 3.55km longer than the sea link over the Mahim Bay in Mumbai.
