Spieth right back in the mix at Memorial

The two-time defending champion shot a 7-under 64 to take a one-stroke lead after the first-round of the 54-hole event near Atlantic City.

Starting quickly at the Memorial is nothing new for Dufner lately.

Warriors: Coach Steve Kerr had hoped to feel well enough to return to the bench but stayed behind the scenes in the locker room as he continues to deal with complications from back surgery almost two years ago. Dufner started the process a year ago and has refined it throughout this season.

The way Dufner played the first two rounds of the Memorial this week at Muirfield Village Golf Club, he has a chance to put the field to sleep. "But I'm looking for more than that this week".

However, he struggled to keep this momentum going throughout his round, and after a string of pars he dropped his first shot on the 14th.

Shane Lowry and Padraig Harrington are both in the mix after an impressive opening round in the Memorial Tournament. 15 and 16 to move to 3 under. Posting one low score after another is never easy, and Dufner isn't sure what to expect Saturday. McGirt finished with a birdie on the par-5 fourth hole and followed with bogeys on Nos.

Dustin Johnson was on the other end of the spectrum.

A majority of Johnson's troubles came at the par-3 16th, where his tee shot found the water. He three-putted from 4 feet on the sixth hole for a double bogey. He didn't make a birdie and shot 78.

It was the first time in almost four years - since the Bridgestone Invitational in 2013 - that Johnson failed to make a birdie.

Dufner had hit all 17 greens in regulation before falling short at the home hole.

Dufner, who was once ranked as high as No. 8 in the Official World Golf Ranking and now sits at No. 65, hasn't quite been able to find the winner's circle in a while but that doesn't mean that he hasn't been playing solid golf. He missed the putts he had been making for two days. "I really love the greens", said the Swede.

"There's a big challenge on this golf course, I think it gets a little tougher, generally speaking, on the weekend".

The shot that got the most attention was Dufner's 6-iron that he holed on No. 18 for his eagle.

"It's been working", he said. I need another couple good rounds, but I feel good with my game.

"Obviously, having won here it brings back good memories", Lingmerth said. Trails Daniel Summerhays by two. Having a week. He's been sneaking up the board all day and is now alone in second at 10 under following three straight birdies.

He said he'll call on memories of two major championship performances previous year - his tie for eighth at the US Open and his solo third place finish at the PGA Championship.

Despite shooting an underwhelming two-over on the front, Watson responded with a birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie sequence on hole Nos.

Kevin Streelman (67) and Kevin Kisner (70) are also seven under.

Zach Johnson dug deep to make the cut on the number with four birdies on his last five holes. He claimed that tomorrow is just another work day for him, and I believe what he says. "I got an awesome break on my third hole today, No. 12. I can always get into the top five and there's a lot of FedEx Cup points and prize money at stake", said Leishman.
