A gunman dressed in black opened fire and shot several people in a Bronx hospital Friday afternoon, police said.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) is now responding and warning people to stay away from the premises.
Gunfire broke out at 2:50 p.m. ET inside the Bronx Lebanon Hospital, according to the NYPD.
Police were still trying to identify how many people had been shot.
"Everything is on lockdown", a hospital spokeswoman told BuzzFeed News. There were also reports of a fire inside the hospital. The cops said that they are handling the situation and have gotten a report of a smoke condition on the 16th floor of the hospital.
A large NYPD response at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital today. The hospital is around 120-year-old and claims that there are almost 1,000 beds spread across multiple units. Its emergency room is among the busiest in New York City.
New York Police Department spokesman Peter Donald posted a message a short time later on Twitter, saying, "One shooter is deceased at the hospital".
It is about a mile and a half north of Yankee Stadium.
