Kolkata: Describing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's wild allegations against him as "baseless", West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi on Wednesday stated that her claims were meant only to "emotionally blackmail him".
On Banerjee and her ministers' contention that the Chief Minister was democratically elected while the Governor was only nominated, the Raj Bhavan said: "It should not be forgotten that the Governor is also appointed by the President on the recommendation of a democratically elected Union Government".
However, CM Banerjee was irked with the Governor's behaviour towards and she was involved in a small spat with him during the major crisis that lurked in her state.
The student of Class X, who put up the allegedly blasphemous post, has been arrested, even as shop-owners downed shutters in areas such as Keosha market, Banshtala, Ramchandrapur and Tentulia, agencies reported, quoting the local police.
As a precautionary measure, the government has suspended Internet services in the area, so that rumours are not spread.
Secondly, the chief minister did a bad job in discussing whatever had transpired between her and the governor, in the open.
"The governor has humiliated the Chief Minister and the people of the state". Speaking at the state secretariat in Kolkata, Mamata said: "I made it clear to him (the governor) that he can not speak to me in such a manner; he can not threaten me".
Leader of the Trinamool Congress Legislature Party Partha Chatterjee said that the party has written to President Pranab Mukherjee and Home Minister Rajnath Singh expressing strong reservations to Governor's call.
"It is wrong to say that Raj Bhavan has become the office of the BJP or the RSS". The talks were confidential in nature and no one is expected to disclose it. Now she has accused Governor. Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP Modh Salim said that it is not a personal issues between the Chief Minister and Government but more important is that peace and amity be restored. The outburst is a testimony to what we have been saying - she has lost control of the state. The Centre should send a team of central observers to assess the worsening law and order situation. These were allowed to take place because of vote-bank politics. He acted like a BJP man - a BJP block president. Condemning the riots, Mamata said, "This is a serious issue, let me handle it seriously".
