Donald Trump speaks in Poland - despite huge protests against country's right-wing government

According to Polish defense minister Antoni Macierewicz, the White House has agreed to sell Poland the Patriot surface-to-air missile system.

Trump, making his second trip overseas since taking office, spoke to a crowd in Warsaw's Krasinski Square, near a monument to the Warsaw Uprising during World War II.

Trump returns to Europe after a shaky first trip to the continent in May and signs of unhappiness around the globe with the start of his presidency. The test of an ICBM marked a major technological advancement for North Korea that US officials have described as intensifying the threat against the bringing the North closer to being able to mount a nuclear warhead atop a missile that could hit American soil.

He added: "So it was Russian Federation and it was probably others also, and that's probably been going on for a long period of time".

The president spoke one day before he's scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the European summit in Germany.

"The United States has demonstrated not merely with words but with its actions that we stand firmly behind Article 5", Trump said.

Trump said Thursday during a major speech delivered in Warsaw that he wants to make sure Poland and its neighbors are "never again held hostage" to a single supplier of energy.

Meanwhile, in the UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has defended Mr Trump's direct approach to politics - including his frequent Twitter outbursts.

The commander in chief also emphasized the US's commitment to NATO's mutual defense clause - after failing to mention it at a speech in Brussels in May.

Instead, Trump bashed the media and former President Barack Obama, and sought to poke holes in the intelligence community's unwavering belief that Putin orchestrated a campaign to influence the race in favor of Trump.

"While we will always welcome new citizens who share our values and love our people, our borders will always be closed to terrorism and extremism".
