It will be only the second time that India has had a Dalit head of state.
Today the Presidential election 2017 voting begins to elect India's president. And he filed his nomination for the election on June 23. The way the numbers stack up, Kovind has a clear advantage over Opposition candidate Meira Kumar, a former Lok Sabha Speaker. It has also allowed five MLAs to vote in the Parliament and four MLAs to vote in other state legislative assemblies.
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Monday said that the Presidential election is a fight between two different ideologies, and not between two persons.
" The President does not belong to any political party".
Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot was scheduled to cast his vote in Gujarat since he had gone to that state.
Polling was conducted smoothly throughout the day and till the time of the conclusion of polling 86 MLAs out of the total 87cast their votes. These have been procured from Mysore Paints and and Varnish Limited, which is a supplier of indelible ink - popularly known as voter's ink - to the Election Commission (EC). For example the total population of Manipur is 1,072,753 (as per the census of 1971, ) and it is divided by 1000 and to that divided by number of MLAs 60.
A total of 776 MPs and 4,120 MLAs were eligible to vote. Other JD (S) rebel MLAs headed by Zameer Ahmed Khan cast their votes for the candidates supported by UPA.
The ruling BJP exuded confidence that Kovind would win with a "comfortable" margin, while the Opposition said its joint pick Meira Kumar was the best choice in the "clash of ideologies".
Kovind's victory against Kumar is said to be a foregone conclusion because nearly 40 parties, including many from outside the NDA fold, have pledged to support him. The ruling NDA (BJP, SHS, TDP, LJSP, SAD, RLSP, AD, GFP, MGP, AINRC, JKPDP, NPF, NPP, PMK, SDF, SWP) has 237,888 in Lok Sabha and 49,560 votes in Rajya Sabha and in state assemblies it has 239,923 votes in its kitty. The latter account for 10 percent of the votes. Team Mulayam has supported the NDA candidate while Akhilesh supported the Opposition candidate.
