Ford is revealing the industry's first pursuit-rated pickup, the 2018 F-150 Police Responder, giving law enforcement agencies a more versatile and capable patrol vehicle.

There is no word about Ford offering a consumer version of this package.

Ford says this truck has the largest passenger volume, payload and towing capacity of any pursuit-rated police vehicle. Other enhancements include upgraded brake calipers and pad friction material, as well as an upgraded front-stabilizer bar for improved handling. Unveiled Thursday in Dearborn, Mich., the Responder gets 375 horsepower and 475 pounds-feet of torque from its 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine, the most offered by any pursuit-rated police vehicle, according to Ford.

With an all-terrain four-wheel drive system, Ford's latest law enforcement vehicle is ready to tackle all manner of road conditions.

. It will be able to hold its own over any terrain thanks to underbody skid plates and 18-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires. There's seating for five, while the cabin has been pared back. Inside there's a column shifter, no center seat and heavy-duty cloth for the seats - the front ones also boasting integrated steel plates to prevent stabbings. Meanwhile, the rear bench and flooring are covered in vinyl for easy clean-ups of unmentionable messes.

The new pickup is based on the F-150 FX4 off-road model, and will be used in "off-road patrol situations for officers in rural environments patrolled by sheriff's departments, border patrol operations and the Department of Natural Resources", said Stephen Tyler, Ford's police brand marketing manager.

A high-output 240-amp alternator helps power the onboard computer and other devices, as well as a police-calibrated speedometer and meters to track engine hours and idling time.

Ford isn't exactly new to non-traditional pursuit vehicles.

The 2018 F-150 Police Responder will go on sale in the spring of 2018.
