Rex Tillerson has no plans to step down, official says

Now there are rumors that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is looking to resign. Trump also has sided with Saudi Arabia in its feud with Qatar even as Tillerson has sought to mediate the dispute between the two U.S. allies. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert denied the rumors, stating, "We have spoken with the secretary".

Tillerson has also been out of the public eye since Friday، and Nauert said today that he's "taking a little time off". "So, he's entitled to take a few days". While Tillerson worked to mediate the dispute, Trump took to Twitter, slamming Qatar and seemingly contradicting his secretary of state's overtures.

Tillerson's friends outside Washington D.C. say he plans to stay at the State Department through the holidays so he can walk away with a year in the cabinet under his belt, CNN reported Monday.

The sources acknowledged that Tillerson could have been venting after a tough week, but his frustration is just the latest in a long list of times he has butted heads with the president and his administration. Tillerson's job status has been the subject of much speculation this week in Washington following a report from CNN. "The secretary has been very clear he intends to stay here at the State Department", Nauert told reporters Tuesday. "If that's what they want to do, fine: Someone will fix in a couple years, but in the meantime we're going to lose a lot of ground". But others told the network Tillerson could leave sooner.

"It is imperative the United States continues to have a lead diplomat for cybersecurity issues, ensuring the United States remains able to work with foreign partners to fulfill its mission of promoting an open, interoperable, secure, and reliable cyberspace while continuing to deter malicious activity, bolster global cybersecurity and avoid conflict in cyberspace", the representatives said in the letter.
