Several others, including Mr Parojinog's wife, were killed during the raid.
Espenido said that Parojinog's family is the main trafficker of drugs in Ozamiz and that drugs that reached the city came from the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa city, Metro Manila.
Ozamiz city mayor was among list of officials publicly shamed a year ago by President Duterte of being linked to drugs.
Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog (second from left) and his daughter, Vice Mayor Nova Parojinog (second from right) hand over a certificate of commendation to Police Chief Inspector Jovie Espenido on July 14, 2017 for "having demonstrated the highest degree of service and commitment to law enforcement".
Police said Dimaukom and his men fired at officers who had set up a checkpoint after receiving reports that the mayor and others were on their way to transport illegal drugs, according to CNN Philippines.
Mayor Reynaldo Parojinig, his wife Susan Parojinig, brother Board Member Octavio Parojinig Jr., Camerman JR Millanar of Lumad TV and the Ozamiz Information center, Mona Parojinig, Miguel Del Victoria, Nestor Cabalan, Daniel Vasquez, "Inting", and four other unidentified people were killed in raids in barangays Baybay San Roque and Baybay Santa Cruz around 2:30 a.m., Ozamiz City stringer Thata Roxas from the Mindanaoan Broadcasting Channel told CNN Philippines.
Senior Supt. Jaysen C.de Guzman, the Misamis Occidental provincial police chief, confirmed to BusinessWorld in a phone interview that they seized firearms, rocket-propelled grenades, and illegal drugs from the Parojinog's properties. He said the fight will not stop until the drug pushers would cease "because the alternatives are either jail or hell".
"I am asking President Duterte to investigate this and the Senate of the Philippines", she said, as family members stirred her away from reporters. A grenade held by one of the mayor's bodyguards exploded during the confrontation, Espenido said.
That's why, she said, she was surprised that the mayor was killed.
Suspected shabu, an M-16 rifle, and cash were also found inside Vice Mayor Nova Parojinog's house.
The Mayor of a southern Philippine city and seven others were killed in an anti-drug operation on Sunday, authorities said.
She said Parojinog did not spare those he suspected to be involved in illegal drugs, including his kin.
"Whatever are the circumstances of the deaths, at least this time, the mayor and the others killed were not under detention in a government facility", Lacson said when sought for comment on the Parojinogs.
Police raided the mayor's house overnight to search for unlicensed guns.
Mr Duterte took office just over a year ago following an election campaign in which he promised to kill tens of thousands in order to put an end to the illegal drugs trade.
In November, Rolando Espinosa Sr., mayor of Albuera in the Leyte province in the Visayas region, was reportedly killed in his jail cell during a gunfight with police. No arrest.no warrant. No judge.
