Missouri Police Officer Killed During Traffic Stop

Officer Gary Michael, 37, was shot and killed late Sunday after pulling over a driver near Clinton, which is about 60 miles north of Springfield. Michael died from his injuries. Police officers are always mindful that something bad could happen.

"We're not sure if any of those rounds struck the suspect, but Officer Michael was fatally wounded", Lowe said.

They are advising the public to avoid contact with McCarthy as he is considered armed and unsafe.

As the hunt for him intensified on Monday, he was named as a suspect.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe said the officer's death was "devastating".

Mr Michael was a lifelong resident of Clinton.

The Missouri Highway Patrol was looking for Ian McCarthy, 39, of Clinton. The suspect then exited his vehicle again and fled on foot.

Originally, Lowe said they were trying to find McCarthy because his auto was involved in the traffic stop.

Lowe says the driver of a Dodge Nitro got out of the vehicle during the traffic stop and started shooting.

"(Michael) was heroic right to the end", Lowe added.

"It's an unprovoked attack on Officer Michael", Lowe told The Washington Post. Neighbors reported seeing a man running from the vehicle after the crash, he said.

"Every traffic stop is different", he said.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of McCarthy should contact law enforcement, call 911 or dial *55 on a cell phone.

'He has already made one killing and decided that's in his mindset.
