Six Loyola Specialties Nationally Ranked By US News

The report reviewed the performance of hospitals in areas from complex, high-risk cancer care to common procedures such as knee replacement surgery, said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis at U.S. News & World Report.

U.S. News ranks hospitals on a number of measures, including patient survival and readmission rates, and patient experience and safety, among other categories.

Children's Hospital CEO Scott Turner, at the time, said he expects the new facility to result in rating bumps next year.

By comparison, Medicare puts its patient-care emphasis on where the patient receives his or her primary treatment, and not where the patient was first admitted for care, as RTI and U.S. News determines.

“Our focus is on continually improving the care we provide, ” Spahlinger said.

Hopkins also ranked among the top three hospitals nationwide in five specialties: gastroenterology, neurology and neurosurgery, ophthalmology, rheumatology, and ear, nose and throat.

Lancaster General Hospital ranked sixth statewide, recognized as high-performing in nine procedures or conditions. Some specialty rankings are also based on hospital reputation, which is determined by surveying over 125,000 physicians across the country.

Penn State Children's Hospital was also ranked by U.S. News as being among the Best Children's Hospitals in cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, neonatology and orthopedics in the 2017-2018 rankings.

Most of the procedures and conditions at Carlisle Regional Medical Center were rated as average, except for abdominal aortic aneurysm and fix and colon cancer surgery, which were both rated by U.S. News & World Report as "below average".

This is the second straight year Mayo Clinic has earned the top honor, after finishing second to Massachusetts General Hospital in 2015. In the 16 specialty areas, only 146 hospitals (just over 3 percent) were ranked in at least one specialty. And like most other rankings, they're not definitive guides.

The health system earned national accolades in 15 of the ranking's 16 areas of medical specialties.

"Patients still have to do their own research and talk with their doctors", U.S. News advises consumers on its website. Many times, the answer depends on the the type of care patients need.

Hospital Compare, The Joint Commission, The Leapfrog Group, Consumer Reports and Healthgrades are some of the other credible resources that provide regular reports on quality and performance of USA hospitals.
