New 'Star Wars' Spinoff Focusing On Obi-Wan Kenobi Being Developed

Now, The Hollywood Reporter claims that Lucasfilm and Disney are looking to make a standalone movie centered around Obi-Wan Kenobi. The project now has no script, according to the report.

The character appeared in the first six "Star Wars" films, first played by Alec Guinness in Episodes 4-6 and then by Ewan McGregor in Episodes 1-3.

A standalone Obi-Wan Kenobi film is set to join the ever-expanding Star Wars universe.

Earlier this year several publications reported murmurings that McGregor had been asked to reprise the role in an Obi-Wan spinoff, but those have not been confirmed.

Billy Elliot's Stephen Daldry is reportedly in talks to direct. Between Rogue One and Han Solo though, something tells me it'll fill in the gap between Revenge of the Sith and the original Star Wars in some way, like maybe he wasn't on Tattooine the whole time. Should Daldry take up the mantle, he will join Lucasfilm in overseeing both the script and development. The Han Solo movie hit some turbulence when directors Christopher Miller and Phil Lord were fired back in June, but Ron Howard is now running the show and the project has almost wrapped. Daldry is now in the development stages in a film version of the Broadway musical "Wicked". A film centered entirely on Tatooine seems a little tiresome for the Star Wars universe-but the powers that be could probably come up with a reason for Obi-Wan to (temporarily) leave the planet, incorporating a few more dynamic settings.

What would you want to see from an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie? McGregor told Entertainment Weekly in April following Star Wars Celebration that he was very interested in joining the new era of Star Wars films. It is unclear now if McGregor would play Obi-Wan in this movie, but it's nearly a foregone conclusion that he will.

The Han Solo movie is due out on May 25, 2018.
