Cory Booker Statues Bill Would Remove US Capitol's Confederate Figures

Currently, there are 12 statues inside of the Capitol building of people who were part of the Confederate States of America and fought against the United States during Civil War, including Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Alexander Hamilton Stevenson.

At the Capitol, some tourists felts the statues should stay for their contribution to history.

A Confederate monument erected in 1910 by the US government memorializes 2,436 Confederate soldiers buried in trench graves at Finn's Point National Cemetery in Pennsville, NJ. Surprisingly enough, Virginia had a Democratic governor then too, current Sen.

"This is just one step", Booker said.

Congress didn't create any additional statues of African Americans until the Obama administration, when in 2009 another bust, this one of Sojourner Truth, was placed in Emancipation Hall of the Capitol Visitor's Center. "We have much work to do".

Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, has also said he wants to work toward "the permanent removal of all offensive and despicable Confederate imagery", Politico reported.

Speaking of the Confederates memorialized by the statues, Armstrong, who is black, said: "I mean, they seceded from the Union".

Trump said many of those who opposed the statue's removal were good people protesting the loss of their culture, and he questioned whether taking down statues of Lee could lead to monuments of George Washington also being removed. "So this is a conversation that is going to, I think, go on now for some time, but I think that everybody needs to have a chance to be heard", Warner told WRVA radio on Thursday.

The president's sadness comes after cities such as Baltimore have officially removed their CSA statues, and after activist Takiyah Thompson took matters into her own hands by removing a statue herself, for which she was arrested.

NAACP Austin Branch President Nelson Linder says he hopes the violence and hate seen in Charlottesville over the weekend can push lawmakers to act this time around.

Another tourist outside the Capitol said he didn't feel strongly one way or the other about the issue, but he appreciated both sides of the debate.

The Democrats rejected President Donald Trump's criticism of the removal of "beautiful" Confederate statues.

An NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll on Monday and Tuesday of 1,125 adults showed 86 percent of the Republicans surveyed thought Confederate statues should remain in place as a symbol of history. They include General Robert E. Lee, commander of the Northern Army of Virginia, who oversaw the abductions of hundreds of freed slaves during the Gettysburg campaign.
