A mother of three from OR named Jenni Miller called out Linton in the comments section, telling her the post was "deplorable" and saying ironically, presumably on behalf of taxpayers: "Glad we could pay for your little getaway.' She received a long, angry rant from Linton in return, in which the actress accused Miller of being 'adorably out of touch".
A top watchdog group wants to know if the millionaire couple took the taxpayer-funded trip on Monday just to see the eclipse in a prime setting, the Washington Post reported.
Questions about the objective of the trip were raised by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) soon after Linton posted the photo.
"The Secretary was on official government travel to Kentucky... the trip was originally planned for earlier in August but was postponed to accommodate the Congressional calendar", the statement read. Steve Mnuchin may have flown too close to the sun when he brought wife Louise Linton to Kentucky for a quick luncheon and a view of the solar eclipse at Ft. Either as an individual earner in taxes OR in self sacrifice to your country?.
WASHINGTON ― An ethics watchdog group is investigating whether Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and his wife, actress Louise Linton, planned a government trip to view the solar eclipse on Monday, the same trip on which Linton created controversy after flaunting the couple's extravagant lifestyle on social media. Adorable!" Linton wrote. "Do you think the United States govt paid for our honeymoon or personal travel?! While it is not customary for the spouse of a Cabinet member to accompany said Cabinet member on official business, Linton often does - the Treasury Department has been sure to make it known that the couple reimburse the government for the cost of her seat. I'm pretty sure we paid more taxes toward our day "trip" than you did. A spokesman told CNN that Linton "does not receive compensation for products she mentions".
Instead of letting it go, Linton ripped into Miller with a long condescending rant, calling her "adorably out of touch and suggesting she "go chill out and watch the new Game of Thrones". It was inappropriate and highly insensitive".
Linton later deleted the photo and made her Instagram account private, before issuing an apology for the incident.
