North Korea Brandishes What It Says Is A Missile-Ready H-Bomb

The nuclear test is the North's first since U.S. President Donald Trump assumed office in January. It heightens tensions between Pyongyang and its neighbors, and challenges the Trump administration head-on.

"We strongly urge the DPRK (North Korea) to face the strong will of denuclearisation from the worldwide community, earnestly abide by the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council, stop taking mistaken actions which worsen the situation and are also not in line with its own interests, and effectively return to the track of solving the problem through dialogue", it added. It's further considering deployment of new US weapons on the Korean peninsula, as part of a long-standing U.S.

July 8, 2016: US and South Korea announce plans to deploy an advanced missile defence system - THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense).

The news reader of the North Korean Central Television announcer said North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un ordered the test, hours after Seoul and Tokyo detected unusual seismic activity at North Korea's nuclear test site. "North Korea might have successfully tested a weapon with significantly large capability".

The bomb it tested is created to be loaded onto an long-range missile, so has made countries such as the United States anxious in a major escalation of tensions. A quake's magnitude is used in calculating a nuclear device's yield.

Since 2006, North Korea has carried out five nuclear tests, including two past year.

Earlier Sunday, Pyongyang claimed it has developed a hydrogen bomb that can be mounted on the tip of an intercontinental ballistic missile - and threatened a high-altitude nuclear explosion that experts fear could wipe out U.S. electrical networks.

"If it forcibly conducted a nuclear test, it's absolutely unacceptable".

North Korea appears to have conducted another nuclear test, the South Korean government said Sunday after seismic authorities detected an artificial natural disaster near Pyongyang regime's known nuclear test site.

That Pyongyang conducted another experiment signals a continued effort to advance as a nuclear state despite years of effort by the global community to reverse those gains.

Japan's chief cabinet secretary has called for the United Nations to impose further economic sanctions to include restricting oil imports to North Korea.

"They only understand one thing!" the US President added.

North Korea's nuclear and missile program has made huge strides since Kim rose to power following his father's death in late 2011.

To back up its claims to nuclear mastery, such tests are vital. It has since maintained a torrid pace in weapons tests, including its first two intercontinental ballistic missiles test in July. The metro area is home to almost half of the South Korean population of 50 million.

Moscow urged all sides involved to hold talks, which it said was the only way to resolve the Korean peninsula's problems.

China's big fear has always been that cutting North Korea off completely could lead to its collapse, unleashing a wave of refugees into China's rustbelt provinces in the northeast. The other is to offer Mr Kim some sort of deal.
