Connecticut State Police have made 11 DUI arrests and issued almost 800 moving violations as part of Labor Day weekend traffic enforcement efforts. This is a first in the Department's 85-year history to offer an abbreviated State Police Academy for existing Virginia Department of Criminal Justice (DCJS) certified law enforcement officers.
Last year, 10 fatal traffic crashes resulted in 10 deaths during the Labor Day holiday weekend. In 43 of those crashes, injuries were reported to police as of Sunday morning.
According to statistics from state police, there have been 11 DUI arrests and 121 crashes.
Connecticut State Police have cited more than 500 drivers for speeding and hundreds more for other violations this holiday weekend.
"While I want every Virginian to enjoy their Labor Day weekend, they must do so without endangering themselves or other travelers on our roads", McAuliffe said in a statement.
Penalties for driving under the influence include mandatory ignition interlock installation on vehicle, fines up to $2,500, license suspension up to one year, and jail sentences also up to one year, the governor's office said.
