Three private universities retain their claim as Oklahoma's highest-ranking schools in the 2018 Best Colleges report released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report.
Louisiana Tech, which is in Ruston, was the only other state school in the top tier of national universities at 216 out of 230. "We are very proud of that status and find it to be one of our primary attractions for our new and transfer students". Clemson's overall rank among national universities was 67th, down one stop from 2016. That's up five spots from a year ago in the overall rankings and two spots among public universities.
UConn has been steadily climbing the ranks since 2000, when it was number 38 among public universities. A total of eight Indian universities made it to this list and University of Delhi has been ranked as India's top provider of highly successful alumni.
The U.S. News rankings methodology focuses on academic excellence, with schools evaluated on hundreds of data points and up to 15 measures of academic quality.
"The ranking reiterates what we know about Sweet Briar: that it's a great place for an excellent education that prepares students for the future", says Bill Allen, dean of enrollment and financial aid, but he, too, agrees that it should be taken with a grain of salt. It ranked 6th in the region previous year. There was a three-way tie for fifth place among Columbia University, Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The 2018 U.S. News & World Report rankings were posted online today (Sept. 12). The Carnegie classification has served as the basis for the Best Colleges ranking category system since the first rankings were done in 1983.
Among regional schools in the South, Loyola University is ranked 10th and Xavier University is tied for 25th.
Ben Sowter, who is the research director at QS, said that a major takeaway from this years ranking is that employability does not depend entirely on prestige and selectivity as universities which have better graduate outcomes have been ranked high regardless of reputation.
Currently, the university's overall retention rate for baccalaureate students is 88 percent, up from 84.7 percent five years ago and up from 80 percent 10 years ago.
"For smaller regional institutions like Misericordia University, name recognition plays a negative factor in the rankings", the release noted.
