1 dead, 4 shot in Washington school shooting, 3 in satisfactory condition

Their injuries are not known. Law enforcement officials confirmed a suspect is in custody.

Fire department spokesman Brian Schaeffer told local media that one student had been killed and that three others were admitted to a nearby hospital in a stable condition.

Spokane placed all schools in the district on lockdown at about 10:30 a.m. PDT (1730 GMT), following the shooting, but an hour later said on Twitter that it had been lifted.

Washington State Senator Maria Cantwell tweeted "My heart is with the Spokane community".

She said she was told that at least one person was shot but was expected to survive. The Spokane Sheriff's Office is expected to provide more information at a news conference sometime on Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting was reported at Freeman High School in Rockford on Wednesday.

Stephanie Lutje told The Associated Press that she was relieved to hear her son was safe after his high school near Freeman was put on lockdown.

Multiple ambulances and a Lifeflight helicopter were dispatched to a high school south of Spokane, Washington, following reports of a shooting.
