Formula One: Singapore extends contract to host night race until 2021

The high down force characteristics of the tight and twisty Marina Bay street circuit suit Red Bull's package and Ricciardo says he expects to be challenging at the front on Sunday evening.

Back in November 2016, then F1 boss Bernie Eccelestone, said that Singapore was no longer interested in hosting the annual race as it has become a destination hotspot, achieving its original goal.

History suggests that it could - five of the last six Singapore Grand Prix have been won by the eventual champion that season, including Nico Rosberg, who took the chequered flag by just 0.488s from Daniel Riccardo last term.

F1 chairman Chase Carey said he was thrilled about the new contract.

"We're proud of the race, we have a good relationship and our goal is to get to a place where we build on that partnership long-term".

From next year, Singapore will be the sole stop that Formula One makes in Southeast Asia, as next month's Malaysian Grand Prix is to be the last.

I am looking forward to the race, although I know it will be very hot and humid, which makes it one of the most hard tracks.

Singapore has considerable appeal as a popular tourist destination, with about "40 to 50 percent of visitors (to the race) from overseas", said Lionel Yeo, the chief executive of Singapore's tourism board.

Inaugurated in 2008, the Singapore Grand Prix was Formula One's first ever night race.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel arrives for practice at the Marina Bay Street Circuit in Singapore this week.
