The Philadelphia Eagles improved to 2-1 in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon at Lincoln Fincial Field when rookie kicker Jake Elliott just barely got a 61-yard field goal to get through the uprights as time expired for a 27-24 victory over the New York Giants. The rookie kicker was a fifth-round pick by the Bengals and joined the Eagles after Caleb Sturgis was injured in Week 1. He was carried off the field by two teammates.
Elliott didn't need to be good from 75 yards on Sunday, but he was confident that he could get the job done from the moment the ball left his foot.
He was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct.
On a hot, humid day, the NFC East rivals looked sloppy for the first three quarters. ". You've just got to ride the wave, and whenever your number is called, it's called".
Beckham said he doesn't mind the kickoff being pushed back to the 20-yard line because of celebration penalties. Beckham, down on all fours, took a few steps and then lifted his right leg in the air to mimic a puppy going potty.
Only five teams since 1980 have made the playoffs following an 0-3 start, and in his Monday conference call with reporters, Giants coach Ben McAdoo offered up his three D-words "that cause irritation" for Big Blue moving forward.
But the penalty wasn't costly.
On the Eagles next drive, Giants safety Landon Collins punched the ball out of tight end Zach Ertz's hands, leading to a turnover. Darkwa ran into the middle of the line and was stopped cold, and the Giants were kept off the scoreboard. He then scored a second touchdown four plays after the fumble and celebrated by raising his first. It's not all their fault, but until Eli Manning and the rest of the offense can show enough to keep the D off the field, this a unit that you don't need to anxious about playing your fantasy footballers against. He broke up three passes and intercepted a ball tipped by linebacker Mychal Kendricks. They went up 21-14 and the game looked bleak for the Eagles. So I was praying that he kicked it short and I was going to be able to run it back and we were going to have that feeling that they had winning in the last second.
"It's a little surreal", Elliott said. "You have ups and downs, and you move onto next week". He used a couple of "choice words" in trying to implore head coach Doug Pederson and special teams coach Dave Fipp to let Elliott try to win the game.
"I was fine with it because it shows that we're together no matter what", Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson said.
Manning was 35 of 47 for 366 yards, three TDs and two interceptions.
Philadelphia rushed for 193 yards on the day, with Wentz passing for just 176 and one touchdown. But in Sunday's game at the Philadelphia Eagles - another loss to make the Giants winless in their first three games of the year - it wasn't a disgusting performance from the offensive line. Shepard had seven receptions for 133 yards and one score. Marshall (eight catches, 66 yards) got more involved early.
Wendell Smallwood led the Eagles with 71 yards on 12 carries.
This will be the Eagles' home opener after they started the season at Washington and at Kansas City. Elliott's record-setting kick set a new franchise record, but he also kicked a game-tying field goal in the same final minute that should not be forgotten, either.
