It might be a unusual match-up, but in a fight between returning Sarah Conner star Linda Hamilton and Liam Neeson, Terminator 6 director Tim Miller thinks that the Terminator actress would hands-down win. During a conversation in a panel with THR to discuss his upcoming directing gig for filmmaker James Cameron's vision for the continuation of the Terminator franchise, Miller explained that one of the reasons for his departure came down to the opportunity to tell different stories.
"The [first] films are more relevant today than they were when he made them", said Tim Miller. "It's not like every time something new happens, it spins out a new reality", said Miller. Maybe we don't understand completely how it works.
It'll revamp and reinvent the sci-fi franchise for the 21st century, which is just as well considering that Cameron's Terminator series has fallen on hard times. "But this is not an alternate timeline".
Miller said he feels special affects can at times be "a trap for filmmakers", noting you have to set rules for yourself to keep it grounded. "I feel like there was so much more to be done with these characters", he says. I don't want to see that.
"It's when you break the rules and just make stuff up and pull it out of your ass in Act Three and people feel like they're on shifting ground". And so, the org part is on the outside, meaning organism. Miller and Cameron hope the new Terminator movie - which will ignore Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Terminator Salvation and Terminator Genisys - will lead to a new trilogy of films, with a writers room that includes David Goyer (Batman Begins), Charles Eglee (Dark Angel) and Josh Friedman (Avatar sequels), the latter of whom created the Terminator spin-off The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
