The Hollywood Reporter broke the news on Friday that Levi was cast as the lead character in the DC comic book adaptation Shazam! to be directed by David F. Sandberg. The word is an acronym of 6 Greek elders; Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury.
Warner Bros. and DC Films announced Zachary Levi will play the titular hero of the Shazam! movie yesterday and the fan artwork imagining what Levi could look like in the role has already started. Production is slated to get underway in February ahead of the film's 2019 release date. However, Levi is no stranger to starring in superhero movies, as the 37-year-old actor can be seen next week in DC competitor Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok. Levi is also known for NBC's spy comedy Chuck, the animated hit Tangled, and the recent TV drama Alias Grace.
Sandberg is set to direct the project and with pre-production now coming to an end, more information surrounding the movie will be coming out in the next few months. The Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation director will step behind the camera with Peter Safran producing.
Earlier this year, it was announced that New Line and DC had made a decision to split Shazam into two separate films in order to give Dwayne Johnson's character, Black Adam, his own solo film following a meeting with DC's Geoff Johns.
One interesting piece of trivia worth noting: Shazam was the most popular superhero of the '40s, and even beat Batman and Superman to the big screen in 1941 with The Adventures of Captain Marvel.
