Conte dismisses Milan links after Chelsea victory

According to the Daily Mirror, "Luiz paid the price for questioning Conte's tactics in a team meeting last week".

Though it remains to be seen how the incident impacts on Luiz's future opportunities, the likes of Diego Costa and Nemanja Matic have seen confrontations with Conte lead to their eventual departures. "He's lackadaisical as a defender but I think he is a very good midfield player and I have said this on numerous occasions".

Perhaps that is why, as the Mirror put it, "David Luiz was left upset as he was made to watch from the side of the pitch and act as a ball boy". I was very happy for this.

"At the end of the match I went to shake the hand [of] the referee and the linesman and then my players", he added. It's normal. I have to make the best decision for the club, not for a single player.

When asked about his future, Conte said: "You talk about the future but every day you talk about mine".

Antonio Conte has consistently claimed he is "different" to his Chelsea predecessors as questions have been raised over his future during recent weeks, but, until Sunday, it was hard to pinpoint exactly what he meant. Kenedy had been on the substitutes' bench for Chelsea's Champions League defeat at Roma, but earned a stern lecture from Conte for yawning his way through the Italian's stormy inquest.

Former Chelsea skipper Terry was subbed at half-time by Joe Mourinho in 2015 against Manchester City and from there on didn't see too much first-team action. "I have to make the best decision for the team".

It will have not gone unnoticed by Luiz that Conte raised both arms above his head to applaud Christensen eight minutes before half-time after the Dane had held off pressure from Marcus Rashford to turn with the ball in his own area and clear the danger.
