Sasikala, kin blamed for IT raids in Poes Garden

The Sasikala faction questioned why Jayalalithaa's house was being targeted and said it was a witch hunt by the EPS government.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday held Sasikala and members of her family responsible for the Income Tax raids at Poes Garden.

Hearing about the raids, lot of AIADMK cadres had gathered in front of Poes Garden, they were later arrested by the Police.

A senior I-T official told to the Hindu that the raids were based on a tip-off that some persons had conspired to remove crucial evidence such as documents and electronic gadgets from the rooms earlier occupied by Sasikala and the late Chief Minister's Personal Assistant Poongundram.

"It is the family of Sasikala and T.T.V. Dinakaran to be blamed for the IT raid", Jayakumar said.

Terming the raids "painful", he said Dinakaran's attack on Palaniswami and Panneerselvam was for political gains. "Friday's search is the result of the raids conducted in their houses".

Post the raids, it was said that the IT department had unearthed over Rs 1,400 crore worth of unaccounted income and had also seized Rs 7.14 crore in cash and jewellery valued at Rs 5 crore.

TTV Dinakaran, criticised the Chief Minister and the other Ministers for being mute spectators for all the events. "We got what we wanted", the official said. "Since Sasikala and her aides were not allowed inside after the intra-party rift, we avoided it during our initial searches", the official said.
