Small Business Administration asks residents to shop local Saturday

The last day of this year's drawing ends on Small Business Saturday, giving participants an opportunity to shop at local businesses to enter for a chance to win the grand prize: a four seated Honda Pioneer UTV, with an accompanying utility trailer from Ott's Farm Equipment & Fallon Welding.

This Saturday, small businesses across the country will be opening its doors with deals for consumers.

Small Business Saturday was first observed in November 27, 2010 by American Express.

Vermont Congressman Peter Welch spent Monday morning shopping in downtown Rutland to help bring awareness to Small Business Saturday and promote entrepreneurship. Small businesses play a key role in helping Coral Springs thrive.

In the past few years the small business shopping holiday has grown. "It's one the biggest days of the year for football fans because it is the day of the Iron Bowl, but most of the stores close at 2 or 3 in the afternoon and kickoff is not until 2:30".

Hours for businesses on Small Business Saturday will vary depending on the business.

"You're supporting your community and putting everything back into your community", said Melissa Murphy. Small businesses, like those in the village's six block shopping district, provide a friendly reprieve, she added.

In Florida previous year, small business owners saw revenue on Small Business Saturday jump by 141 percent over average daily revenue, according to a study released by San Francisco-based Womply, which provides data and software to small businesses across the country.

But Goldthwait said there are many challenges to owning and operating a small business. A proprietor knows his or her inventory, and they are likely to be at the shop if you have any questions or follow-up requests.

Some of the downtown businesses will be running sales, but Baisden said the main point is to get people downtown to see what local businesses have to offer. Because when small businesses succeed, we all do.

In Macomb County, Shore said, she has seen growth in small businesses for the last 10 years, even during the recession.

But unlike small businesses, the Walmarts and Targets of the world are unable to offer one very specific, and important, experience to their shoppers.

"I am once again proud to acknowledge the many quality and vital small businesses in every corner of our city and the invaluable contributions they make to our economy and the life of our community", said O'Brien, a former downtown merchant. So it's not exactly vital for independent retailers to participate in the Small Business Saturday campaign, but it sure is fun.
