Small Business Saturday promotes local Jackson stores

As Black Friday is winding down, there's another special shopping day tomorrow.

Meinhart said it's the first year they've taken part in Small Business Saturday.

Other shops on Beach Street, many which suffered flood damage after Hurricane Irma, also were seeing extra customers on Small Business Saturday.

In 2010, American Express launched the national Small Business Saturday campaign to encourage people to spend money locally during the holiday season.

"We know exactly what to give families once they tell us the ages of their children", Berg said.

Her business is one of millions nationwide that participate in the Small Business Saturday program. This is the 2nd year for the small business Savannah event.

A few miles away is a new concept for some, it's called a benevolent boutique where Rachel Viele is encouraging customers to shop in your backyard to help the local economy and those internationally.

"Half of everyone in Illinois, half of everyone in America works for a locally-owned small business", said Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner at a bakery in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood.

These small businesses donate an estimated 250 percent more than larger businesses to area non-profits and community causes, they account for almost 48 percent of the jobs in MA, and were responsible for roughly 64% of new jobs created in the U.S in the last decade. She said it's a way for her to empower women in the community. "My sisters are great and the rest of my staff is really wonderful", Meinhart said.

"These are people that live in our community and do good for out community".

So whether you're shopping for someone you care about, or maybe picking up a little something for yourself, Meinhart says try shopping local for something unique.

"It's such a gift to all of our customers that the meters are free from Thanksgiving to Christmas starting at 11 o'clock", Brandy said.

Seefeldt started the idea when she opened her studio in 2002.

"I think it's super important to support small businesses".

Twisted Wicker's regular hours are Monday through Saturday, from 9 a.m.to 5 p.m.
