Trump's Christmas card says 'Merry Christmas,' Obama's never did

But the article portrays Melania Trump's effort to force a decision out of her husband as having backfired, thrusting her into a public role - and accompanying bright spotlight - that she did not want.

Mrs Trump says: "The president, Barron, and I are very excited for our first Christmas in the White House". You go to department stores, and they'll say, "Happy New Year" and they'll say other things.

The decorations include 71 wreaths, 53 Christmas trees, more than 18,000 lights, more than 12,000 ornaments, more than 3,100 yards (about 2,800 metres) of ribbon, and more than 1,000 feet (300 meters) of garlands, the White House said.

In Trump's defence, she was also getting a lot of love for the overall decorations which mark her family's first Christmas in the White House. Ballerinas provided entertainment at the launch, and danced their way through Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker.

A tree-lined walkway leading to a beautifully decorated tree might sound like a good festive addition to the White House this Christmas. "The decorations are up! Wishing you a Merry Christmas & joyous holiday season!".

The children visiting the White House were clearly taken aback by Melania's stunning looks and grace, and rushed to hug. One boy said, "She's attractive, like an angel!"
