Former Trump Adviser Flynn Pleads Guilty To Lying To FBI

Say what you like about Flynn, but an ex-general follows the chain of command. At a minimum, that would mean Trump was covertly behind those contacts and that the president knew about the content of the Flynn-Kislyak meetings last December even as other senior officials, including Vice President Pence, were in the dark and publicly exonerated Flynn.

Trump's former national security adviser admitted to lying about his conversations with Russia's ambassador to the United States during the transition period before Trump's inauguration. We hope that the cooperation of General Flynn that Special Counsel has secured as a part of this plea agreement extends to Flynn's cooperation with our committee, as his testimony could greatly advance our efforts.

How will he co-operate with the investigation?

Flynn pleaded guilty on Friday to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and agreed to cooperate with investigators working on Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe.

Mueller's team announced charges in October against three other Trump campaign officials, former chairman Paul Manafort and his business associate Rick Gates, and a former campaign foreign policy adviser, George Papadopoulos.

The probe focuses on Russian meddling, and potential plans between Russia and Trump's campaign aimed at sending the billionaire to the White House.

The court filings Friday describe a "very senior member" of Trump's transition team who directed Flynn to contact officials from UN Security Council countries, including Russian Federation, to learn where each country stood on the vote on a resolution condemning Israeli settlement activity. Mueller's prosecutors did not reveal the names of the officials, but indicated they were senior and within Trump's inner circle.

The false statements related to Flynn's contact with Russian officials, according to the special counsel.

He said he is co-operating with Mr Mueller and his team of prosecutors.

Flynn and the official discussed that the transition team did not want Russian Federation to escalate the situation, according to the filings, and Flynn called Kislyak immediately after his conversation with the transition official to request that "Russia not escalate the situation and only respond to the U.S. sanctions in a reciprocal manner".

What were the conversations with the Russians about?

Flynn is the fourth former Trump associate to face charges in the investigation, the first who actually served in Trump's White House. Flynn resigned under pressure on February 13, following The Post's disclosure that he had, indeed, discussed sanctions.

At President Barack Obama's direction, the U.S. abstained from voting on the resolution, a rare move that allowed the UN Security Council to unanimously condemn Israeli's settlement activity.

The Obama administration, in a rare step that shocked its Middle East ally, planned to abstain on the motion rather than veto it as had been done in the past.

At the time, Israel was lobbying furiously against the resolution and President-elect Trump's team spoke up on behalf of the Jewish state. Trump personally called Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi to press the case against the condemnation, and Egypt postponed the scheduled showdown on December 22 - the same day Flynn met Kislyak.
