Julian Assange's official Twitter account disappears

The tweet was later deleted and the Navy later apologized for the mistake.

The official WikiLeaks Twitter account was still live but wasn't mentioning the Assange account.

Others were hesitant to believe Assange is actually the one controlling his account upon its return, with many pointing out a decrease in followers.

A Twitter spokesperson did not answer questions asking if the account was suspended but pointed to the company's language on how users can deactivate and reactivate their own accounts. Without a whistleblower, we may never know.

Julian Assange is having an odd Christmas morning.

Julian Assange's Twitter account was the subject of speculation and conspiracy theories Christmas day. When you search for a suspended Twitter account, it redirects you to a different message.

According to the Wayback Machine internet archive, Assange's most recent tweet is from Friday.

WikiLeaks also posted a screenshot of the US Navy's since-deleted tweet which read "Julian Assange" in quotation marks.

The WikiLeaks founder has been holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy in London since 2012, fighting sexual assault allegations in Sweden. Sweden has since dropped those charges, but the United Kingdom government has threatened to arrest Assange should he leave the embassy due to a separate warrant.

Neither Twitter nor Assange has commented on the matter, though the 46-year-old has already tweeted several times since his return to the network - mostly soliciting donations.
