While North Korea has not yet agreed to talks with the United States about ending its nuclear weapons program, it has grown increasingly anxious about the increase in US military assets in the region.
"It sends the unambiguous message to Pyongyang that further defiance will invite further punishment and isolation", Ambassador Nikki Haley said after the vote. China, which the US says supplies most of North Korea's crude, hasn't reported any volumes in its published customs data since 2013.
According to the latest figures from the General Administration of Customs, China's trade with North Korea in November rose 12.5 per cent from October to US$388 million, but remained far below the US$613.2 million recorded for the same month a year earlier, suggesting the restrictions already in place were having an impact.
"If the USA wishes to live safely, it must abandon its hostile policy towards the DPRK and learn to co-exist with the country that has nuclear weapons and should wake up from its pipe dream of our country giving up nuclear weapons which we have developed and completed through all kinds of hardships", said the statement, carried by the North's official Korean Central News Agency.
North Korea on Sunday called the latest U.N. sanctions to target the country "an act of war" that violates its sovereignty, and said it is a "pipe dream" for the United States to think it will give up its nuclear weapons.
"China has made enormous efforts to push for settlement through dialogue and negotiations and has paid a price higher than all the other parties for the goal of implementing the council's resolutions", Deputy Ambassador Wu Haitao said.
North Korea has received several sanctions in the past over its nuclear and missile program.
While China has supported earlier United Nations sanctions it has been reluctant to agree to Washington's calls for restrictions that it considers would threaten the lives of ordinary North Koreans. Diplomatic efforts to quell the threats and denuclearize North Korea have failed to move the needle on the situation's urgency.
Signs of increased unrest in North Korea have been noted in recent months.
The resolution also demands that countries inspect ships in their territorial waters that are suspected of carrying oil and other banned products to North Korea.
South Korea, for its part, offered encouragement for the path of diplomacy and urged the North to join the upcoming Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. South Korea's military said the missile reached an altitude of 2,800 miles and flew 596 miles.
Besides putting limitations on energy, export and import sectors, the UNSC also imposed a ban on North Korean exports of food products, machinery and industrial and electrical equipment, news agency ANI reported.
DPRK is short for North Korea's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
In addition, the resolution subjects the Ministry of the People's Armed Forces and 16 more North Korean individuals to a global asset freeze and travel ban.
