Notes on Nick: Foles struggles mightily against Cowboys

Third-stringer Nate Sudfeld started the second quarter and played the rest of the game. I know this will bring Eagles fans no comfort and it doesn't matter if they don't deliver from here, but Doug Pederson and his crew deserve to be proud of the accomplishment. Philadelphia's starting quarterback, Nick Foles, only saw action in the first quarter, but he completed 4 of 11 passes for 39 yards, an interception and a 9.3 passer rating. But he has followed up with two poor performances.

The special teams were even better, at least what we saw of them. He was tackled inside the 5 after catching a lateral on a desperation play to end the game.

The Cowboys won and finished their season with a 9-7 record, which doesn't look bad, but they missed the playoffs and had an extremely disappointing season a year after they were the No. 1 seed in the NFC. The idea was to build a little confidence and momentum to carry into the playoffs.

"I'm sad the season is over", Ezekiel Elliott said.

Better quarterbacks are coming in the playoffs, and they'll take advantage of the Eagles if their corners play like this. That capped a 99-yard touchdown drive. He was the first player to reach 100 against the Eagles since Washington's Matt Jones ran for 135 yards in Week 6 previous year.

This scoring drought came despite the Eagles sitting six defensive starters and using mostly backups in the second half. The Eagles desperately need their other units to be firing on all cylinders to give themselves a chance to win in the playoffs, because the gap between hopeful MVP Carson Wentz and their current option is clear. Then came a short run and a sack.

Since the beginning of the Game 15 win over Oakland, Foles is now 1-for-17 on third down. Maybe the offense could have put up points if Torrey Smith doesn't drop a pass on third down on the first drive, but it's hard to say. Foles was hurried and threw an incomplete pass on fourth down. Cowboys rookie cornerback Chidobe Awuzie hauled the ball in near midfield for an easy interception. They finally gave up a score in the beginning of the fourth quarter, but it's hard to be mad at them given how they held up over the course of the game. "That's all I care about".

This was the first time an Eagles-Cowboys game had ever been scoreless at halftime, according to ESPN. It was the first time in a Cowboys-Eagles game since the series began in 1960.

Philadelphia Eagles punter Donnie Jones is seen in an Aug 17 game.

The Cowboys went on to total 301 yards of offense, which included 129 yards rushing and 172 through the air. Jones ruptured his Achilles tendon before the draft.

Defensive stud Vinny Curry was forced to play a lot on Sunday because Brandon Graham was out. Running back Jay Ajayi was the lone offensive starter inactive against the Cowboys. Not the way you'd imagine a 13-3 regular season would end, but with no major injuries to the core guys who are left, it ends up being a success anyway.
