Out of more than 3 crore applicants in the first draft contains the names of 1.9 crore Indian citizens living in Assam. They said the remaining about 1.39 crore cases are under examination, scrutiny or field verification process.
The Congress said the Registrar General of India's first draft is the follow-up action of the "1985 Assam Peace Accord" signed by then Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi.
Sailesh at a press conference held at midnight also made a draft public.
"This is a part draft". The rest of the names are under various stages of verification. Other names are in various stages of verification and as soon as the verification is done, we will come out with another draft.
Assam has been driven into a conflict between the permanent residence and those who have migrated from Bangladesh. The only time that a National Register of Citizens (NRC) was prepared was in 1951 when after conduct of the Census of 1951."It was prepared by recording particulars of all the persons enumerated during that Census, the website said. The issue of updating the NRC of 1951 was first raised by the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) more than three decades ago".
"There is no need to panic as rest of the documents are under verification", said Prateek Haleja, NRC State Coordinator.
Names of AIUDF supremo Badruddin Ajmal, MP Sirajuddin Ajmal, MLAs Hafiz Bashir Ahmed Kasimi and Haji Aminul Islam are not in the first draft, even as the party claimed that some family members of those leaders have found their names on the first list.
Applicants can send an SMS from their pre-register mobile number to 97555655 or 9108464438 or 9108464450 in the format 'ARN space ARN (number)' to get information on the inclusion of their names in the NRC draft. Applicants can also check your name in NRC draft through SMS and by calling on toll-free numbers.
However, on being contacted, State BJP general secretary and spokesperson Rupam Goswami dismissed all allegations regarding attempts by the ruling side to delay the exercise and added that the NRC update process is being directly monitored by the Supreme Court and the government is only playing the role of facilitator.
The entire process will be completed within 2018, Sailesh said.
The Office of the State Coordinator of National Register of Citizens, Assam, has arranged for five ways to check the names included in the draft.
