Oakland Raiders officially announce hiring of Jon Gruden

The Raiders have announced a news conference for this upcoming Tuesday, January 9th which will be the official welcome of Gruden to the Oakland Raiders franchise.

In his 11 years of coaching, Gruden compiled a 95-81 record, including a Super Bowl championship with the Bucs during the 2012 season.

The worst-kept secret of the week has been confirmed: Jon Gruden will return to coach the Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders fell to 6-10 in 2017 after going 12-4 and earning a playoff berth for the first time since 2002 in 2016.

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Gruden's contract, and the contracts his assistants will sign, will be heavily backloaded. You might be familiar with "Gruden's QB Camp", which was as segment on ESPN where Gruden would interview college quarterbacks entering the NFL Draft. Washington and Oakland are not scheduled to play again until 2021. Now returning to the team that provided him with his first Head Coaching gig, he'll walk on to the field in front of thousands of fans who adore him. Jim and John Harbaugh were active for four seasons from 2011-14 in San Francisco and Baltimore, respectively. "I can tell you we believe the Rooney Rule was complied with", Lockhart said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Raiders were not releasing the names of candidates. He was 2-2 in the postseason, losing in the AFC title game following the 2000 season and the divisional round in 2001.

This would not mark the first time the Raiders brought back a coach for a second stint.

The move comes 20 years after he was hired by late owner Al Davis as the NFL's youngest head coach at age 34.

Other teams have also done it, with one of the most recent notable coaching hires being Joe Gibbs in Washington.
