According to GasBuddy, gas prices on Sunday were 2.4 cents per gallon higher than the same day a year ago and 2.6 cents more per gallon than a month ago.
AAA's January 8 survey of prices in MA finds self-serve, regular unleaded averaging $2.48 per gallon.
Knoxville- $2.25, down 1.3 cents per gallon from last week's $2.27.
The range in prices in the latest AAA survey for unleaded regular is 48 cents, from a low of $2.31 to a high of $2.79. It was the second consecutive week that the Jackson area had the highest average.
GasBuddy and AAA also agree that prices are poised for a seasonal slide, at least for the spring.
Gas in Rhode Island is 7 percent higher than at this time a year ago when prices were averaging $2.35 per gallon, a difference of 18 cents.
Prices at the pump remain elevated due to strong oil prices.
"Retail prices could drop 5 to 15 cents in the next month and a half while supply outpaces demand", said Mark Jenkins, spokesman at AAA in Tampa. The first two months of the year are typically the times of year that gasoline demand is at its weakest, and with builds in gasoline stock anticipated next week, prices will have a hard time going much higher in the short term.
