Coutinho undergoes Barcelona medical ahead of €160m transfer

Barcelona signed midfielder Philippe Coutinho because they were given a significant discount on the price Liverpool were asking for him in the last transfer window, vice-president Jordi Mestre said on Monday.

The Brazilian was presented to more than 7,000 fans at the Nou Camp and later told reporters that it was a dream for him to play for his new club.

Barcelona have confirmed Philippe Coutinho will not be able to make his debut until at least the end of January due to a thigh injury.

He has a minor thigh injury and missed the club's past two games, including Friday's FA Cup third-round win against Everton.

Quizzed on where the Brazil worldwide would play regularly, he added: 'We will wait until I have seen him train for a day at least until we talk about that'.

"He helped make an effort, and he was patient, and that was been key in him coming here".

Diario Gol link the 29-year-old with Arsenal and Liverpool, as well as Juventus, who are all looking at midfielders to move for next summer.

Klopp had stressed on several occasions over the past few months that Coutinho was not for sale at any price despite Barca's continued interest.

Speaking about Suarez's influence on his move and his time at Liverpool, Coutinho said: "Luis a great player, I played with him at Liverpool and I am really happy to play with him again".

"I would like to thank all the Liverpool fans, all the staff and all the players for the years I lived there".

Coutinho visited the Hospital of Barcelona early on Monday to complete the first part of his medical and is due to undergo final checks at Camp Nou later.
