The company and its Detroit rivals, Ford Motor Co. and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, are bringing on new trucks at a time when overall US new vehicle sales have been falling, but truck sales continue to grow as consumers abandon passenger cars in favor of pickups, SUVs and crossovers.
The 2019 Silverado made its official debut at the Detroit auto show after an early introduction at an event celebrating Chevy Truck's 100th anniversary in November 2017 in Texas. The V8 gasoline engine has also been revised.
Police said they responded to the 3:38 a.m. accident during heavy rain, and found the pickup truck down a steep embankment and submerged in the creek. Consequently, the most dramatic detail is the "side gills" (a design solution taken from the current Camaro) that suck and channel air through the gaps and around the front wheel, a typical trouble spot for vehicle with large faces. GM will offer no fewer than six different engine and transmission combinations, including a new 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder Duramax diesel paired to a 10-speed gearbox. At the same time, space devoted to passengers and to cargo has been increased, the bed is the most practical in its category and the choice of versions and powertrains has been beefed up. Most of that volume was created by widening the maximum width of the bed floor almost seven inches. Initially, the floor of the bed will be made of a roll-formed, high-strength steel. The bed is wider than before and now features a total of 12 tie-down points, up from four.
There are new angles that continue along the fenders into the front door panels that project a leaner look and probably improve aerodynamics. Chevrolet notes this change provides better wheel alignment than the stamped components they replace. "Fifteen years ago the product cycle was much longer, but now it seems nearly every year they are trying to one-up each other with improvements and new models".
Improved aerodynamics: Key elements of the front grille are front functional air curtains, similar to those introduced on GM's latest Camaro sport vehicle, which reduce aerodynamic drag by routing air around the front wheel wells. The front grille comes with functional air curtains that reduce aerodynamic drag while a strong profile and an integrated spoiler at the rear help reduce wing drag from the bed. The 2019 Silverado has improved aerodynamic efficiency by 7 percent, according to GM.
More features: Silverado will be available with a power up/down tailgate that can be operated from the key fob, interior button or by hand.
Despite larger dimensions, the all-new pickup truck is 450 pounds lighter than its predecessor.
"High Feature" customers represent the fastest-growing part of the truck market and want luxury-car refinement and appointments without sacrificing capability or durability.
The highest-volume vehicle GM sells in North America is a full-size pickup truck-one that likely also contributes outsize profits from each of its hundreds of thousands of units.
Chevrolet designers wanted to convey the look of an advanced, modern truck without straying from the Silverado's workman roots. "Others fee a truck isn't a truck without a chrome bumper".
