He made a nerveless three-metre birdie putt at the first playoff hole to ensure that his chances of winning would remain, and several brilliant iron shots including one at the fifth playoff hole that he almost jarred for eagle.
"I knew it was going to be tough and my putter really saved me all day", Linciome said. "I know that a year ago wasn't the greatest season for me".
Now: If you need to make the flawless shot to have any chance at an eagle try, I get taking a little bit of extra time to figure out the ideal club and approach.
The win was the third in a row on the PGA Tour for TaylorMade's new line of M3 and M4 drivers which feature a technology called Twist Face, which refers to a modest curvature in the face that results in the high toe area being slightly more open and the low heel area being slight more closed, in an effort to produce straighter shots on strikes in those areas.
5- 18th hole: Day finds a fairway trap and Noren hits the green in two, applying the pressure.
Holmes effectively fell out of the hunt when he missed the 15th green with a wedge and took bogey, and then missed a 4-foot par putt on the 16th hole.
1- 18th hole (par 5): Noren layed up and pitched close, meaning Day had to make a three-metre birdie to continue.
Despite his success on the European Tour, Noren is little known in the United States - and he's happy to fly under the radar.
On Sunday, Day and Noren birdied three of five playoff holes at the scenic course adjacent to the Pacific Ocean.
Once they both birdied again at the fifth playoff hole, there was no way of continuing. The competitor in me is very disappointed right now.
Day joked that they could have continued to play, that all that was needed was some vehicle headlights along the fairway.
"We both played some pretty good golf, especially down 18 going back and forth, back and forth, which is good entertainment for the fans", Day said.
"I was still trying to win". Day shot a final-round 70 with four birdies and two bogeys, Noren shot 73 with three birdies and four bogeys, and Palmer shot 72 with three birdies and three bogeys. The trio finished regulation tied at 10-under 278.
Tiger Woods finished in a tie for 23rd at 3-under 285 in his first PGA Tour appearance since undergoing his fourth back surgery last April. Brooke Henderson, the leader Saturday night when play was suspended because of darkness, shot a 72 to finish ninth at 6 under.
Li started the final round at Emirates Golf Club with a one-shot lead and closed with a 3-under 69.
Asked about the delay on the 72 hole, Holmes was unapologetic.
Rahm had a chance to reach No. 1 in the world with a repeat victory at Torrey Pines. "I had my best mate on the bag and it was a nice way to go". I wanted to win. I had the advantage I thought.
Overall, Woods said he was encouraged with his performance in the tournament.
"I got a lot out of my rounds", Woods said.
However, with light fading, the four-hole playoff has pushed play into an extra day and will resume on Tuesday morning (AEDT). "I fought hard for these scores".
