There is no recovery for someone falsely accused - life and career are gone. "Some are true and some are false".
Ivana Trump has since retracted her allegations and said in a statement for a 1993 book that while she had referred to the incident as a "rape", she did not want her words "to be interpreted in a literal or criminal sense".
"I stand by my previous comments of the Rob Porter that I have come to know since becoming Chief of Staff, and believe every individual deserves the right to defend their reputation", the statement from Kelly said.
Jennifer Willoughby, the ex-wife of former White House staff secretary Rob Porter, wrote in a blog post a year ago about the alleged pattern of physical and verbal abuse she faced in her marriage, calling the abuse "insidious".
Meanwhile, a number of Democrats denounced Trump's comments about Porter and his lack of empathy for the women who alleged abuse.
Kelly, a retired Marine general and Boston native, is facing criticism because he initially defended Porter against the allegations, only to back down after images emerged of one of Porter's ex-wives with a black eye.
"It's fair to say we all could have done better over the last few hours or last few days in dealing with this situation", said White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah, who faced a barrage of questions about Kelly during a press briefing. "He's had a number of controversies recently". In recent weeks, the president has complained about the chief of staff to his circle of informal advisers, according to two people who speak to the president regularly but are not authorized to publicly discuss private conversations.
The White House confirmed late Friday that a second staff member had resigned over allegations of domestic abuse. The staff secretary resigned later Wednesday.
Colbie Holderness, Porter's first wife, shared photos with CNN that she said were taken after he allegedly punched her in the face in 2005. He added, "It should be able to focus on continuing President Trump's historic accomplishments for the American People".
The FBI typically takes such charges, and its impact on a security clearance, to the White House counsel's office, whose job is to determine if those charges are disqualifying.
Porter's ex-wives detailed the allegations to the Federal Bureau of Investigation over the course of a routine background check, they told CNN. Porter's former girl friend spoke to Mr. Kelly about the allegations in October.
The host was not having it, however, and said "let's play it again" before his producers ran the clip of Trump speaking about Porter.
"Mr. President, what you call "political" are actually called facts, and your concern for sources and methods would be more convincing if you hadn't made a decision to release the GOP memo ('100%') before reading it and over the objections of the FBI", Schiff posted.
Later the same day Kelly suggested some of them "just should have probably gotten off the couch and signed up".
Others in the White House told the newspaper that Kelly - who was installed in his current post in July to help bring order and stability to the White House - had known of the complaints since October.
