India film star Kamal Haasan launches political party

Among other politicians, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also congratulated Haasan via a pre-recorded message at the event.

The first day of Kamal Haasan's political journey seems to have brought the two big political parties of Tamil Nadu - the DMK and the AIADMK - on a single line.

A day before he was in Madurai to finalise the arrangements, that include a rally in Rameswaram today evening, where the actor-turned-politician will announce the name of his party and unfurl the party flag.

The actor's entry in Tamil politics is being keenly watched by political observers, especially at a time when the other cine-icon of the state - Rajinikanth- has also triggered speculations over his imminent political debut.

Senior AIADMK leader and Minister D Jayakumar on Wednesday endorsed DMK Working President M K Stalin's remarks apparently against Kamal that actors venturing to politics were like paper flowers.

Kamal Haasan said there was "no politics" involved in his visit to the late APJ Abdul Kalam's residence, or his proposed one to a school, which did not fructify as the administration denied him the permission, where the former President had studied. Actually, it will come only from simplicity.

Haasan arrived in Madurai from Rameswaram after visiting former president APJ Abdul Kalam's home where he sought blessings from the late leader's brother.

When asked whether his children would enter politics, he said they are already in politics, pointing to the thousands of fans.

"Last night, Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu asked me not to mind the left or right but just commit to action". Fans were seen insane to click selfies with the actor. "I have more responsibility here".

BJP Tamil Nadu unit chief Tamilisai Soundararajan said Kamal Haasan may make it to the headlines but "could not become a leader". Kejriwal said he has been a fan of Haasan's acting.

"If you want corruption, vote for DMK and AIADMK". Explaining the symbol of the party, Haasan said, "It is the map of a new South India. I have great admiration for him", he said.
