Fiorentina FC Captain David Astori Is Dead

The 31-year-old Italy global centre-back died on the night of Saturday into Sunday, on the eve of his team's Serie A trip to Udinese, which was subsequently postponed.

He was found at Fiorentina's hotel in Udine where his side were preparing for a Serie A clash against Udinese.

As tributes flowed in and matches were postponed for mourning, Udine chief prosecutor Antonio De Nicolo said Monday a probe had been opened into Astori's death, with the possible charge being culpable manslaughter.

He spent six years at the Sardinian club before being lent to Roma and Fiorentina, where he was signed on a permanent basis in 2016.

Astori joined Fiorentina on loan in August 2015 and the club signed him outright one year later.

He was raised at AC Milan but never played for their senior team.

Astori scored his only worldwide goal in the 2013 Confederations Cup third-place play-off against Uruguay, giving Italy a first-half lead in a match which finished 2-2.

Legendary Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon posted on social media following the shock news of Davide Astori's death.

Italian authorities have confirmed that they have opened manslaughter proceedings into the death of Fiorentina captain Davide Astori.

Beyond football's walls, former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, who was born and raised in Florence, was stunned and saddened by the news.

As the news of his death broke Cagliari were about to kick off against Genoa.

The Rossoneri said of their former player on their Twitter account: "A man who loved football and who grew up as footballer with us".

"You were the best expression of an old-fashioned world", Buffon said, "one that people have left behind, and which was governed by values like altruism, elegance, politeness and respect toward others".

"Congratulations indeed, you were one of the best sports figures I came across".

Meanwhile, fans of the Italian club have started to pay their respects to Astori by leaving tributes and flowers outside the club's stadium, Stadio Artemio Franchi. "How many times did we laugh together?"
