Steelers expected to franchise tag Le'Veon Bell

The tag means Bell has until July 16 to negotiate an improved deal with the Steelers, but he is unable to speak to other teams. And nothing spurs action like a good deadline. This move has immediately drawn much attention given that Bell had previously stated that he had no desire to play under that designation once again.

With a 13-3 record, the Steelers finished second in the AFC a year ago, behind the Patriots.

Bell has been adamant that he would like to get a long-term extension worked out, but he turned down a deal a year ago that would have paid him $60 million over five seasons.

The only player given the transition tag was Chicago cornerback Kyle Fuller. 2018 would mark Bell's sixth season in the NFL.

He took to Twitter and commented on his historic scrimmage yards per game numbers.

"But obviously, when the end of July comes, wherever we're at ... if I sign, everybody'll be happy, but if not, I guess I gotta play it by ear". "We have options with the tag that's out there".

Few running backs have ever earned $26.6 million guaranteed over two seasons, as Bell now stands to do. In eight National Football League seasons with New Orleans, the New York Jets and Jaguars, the 29-year-old masher has rushed for 4,852 yards and 28 touchdowns. It'd be a worthwhile investment for a team that was one quarter away from playing in the Super Bowl. NBA executive vice president of basketball operations Kiki VanDeWeghe announced the fine on Tuesday.

"We won't let D-Law not be a Dallas Cowboy next year", Jones said, according to the team's official site. "Then we'll go back to work". Ansah will be 29 years old before the season starts, and while his production has been elite at times, it has also been sporadic (Sacks per year: 8, 7.5, 14.5, 2, 12).

It appears Bell will have to continue waiting to reset the free-agent market for the NFL's top running backs. While the two sides still have until July 15 to agree on a long-term contract, the Steelers don't seem anxious about his January threat.

"There are advantages that the franchise tag gives you", Jones said, according to Kate Hairopoulos of the Dallas Morning News. If that's the case, he isn't likely to get that kind of deal. I see it both ways. If a deal is not struck by that deadline, he would play under the one-year tender once again. Bell signed the franchise contract in 2017 after sitting out offseason workouts. He was previously a first-team AP All-Pro selection in 2014 and second-team in 2016.

Free agency begins on March 14.

Having leverage at a premium position generally results in a big paycheck.

Teams do not have to use a tag, and those that do may use only one tag. The answer will become clear by Tuesday. Los Angeles could use its tag on either safety LaMarcus Joyner or wide receiver Sammy Watkins.

"Both of those guys got what they deserved", Bell said.
